15mm HITTITE EMPIRE 1380 BC - 1180 BC AVAILABLE NOW!

NEW-KINGDOM EGYPTIAN 1543 BC-1069 BC

This period covers the Hittite empire from the accession of Suppiluliumas circa 1380 BC. Mitanni was acquired as a vassal state around 1348BC and Syria around 1340BC. After that an Hittite army would usually field contingents of troops from these kingdoms, including 2-man Syrian chariots primarily intended as mobile archers platforms. "Syrian" here is meant to include all the states allied or feudatory to Hatti in that general area, such as Canaanites, Phoenicians, Retennu, Ugaritics and Khaaru. Hittite tactics were based on the offensive use of heavy chariots, with infantry adopting a supporting role, usually depicted deployed in the rear in deep rectangular blocks of tight-packed troops with spear in one hand and sword in the other, described in the Egyptian account of Kadesh as "teheru", a term they also used for their own elite troops. From what we now can understand from the Hittite sources, the Arzawa land Wilusa, identified with the archaeological site of Troy, was a point of conflict between the Hittites and the Ahhiyawa. This provides a striking background for Homeric scholars researching the origin of the tradition of the Achaean attack on Ilios. The Hittite empire was eventually crippled by the "Sea Peoples" invasion of the 1170s.

This range has been realized by Red Copper Miniatures, based on their own study and research before sculpting. The handmade individual design and 3D printing technology allows them to develop their own characteristic style, versatile for 15mm and 28mm, with great detail and functionality, but without losing the personality of each model. Red Copper Miniatures models combine respect for historical rigor and the freshness and epic of attractive designs, with new, varied, dynamic and unique poses.
We print them on demand with very high definition machines using our own blend of different resins to achieve superb detail and
plastic like material properties.

Red Copper Miniatures are LARGE 15mm that would mix well with Xyston and Legio Heroica (sometime referred to as 18mm).
If you prefer we can reduce them in size to "standard" 15mm to match our own or Essex miniatures!

Also available as 1:72 or 28mm on demand!

Muwatalli II as leader of the Hittite army

Muwatalli II is best known as the Hittite ruler who fought Ramesses II to a standstill at the Battle of Kadesh. During the early campaigns of Ramesses II the Egyptians marched north into Syria threatening the Amurru kingdom that was critical to Hittite economy. Securing Amurru was Muwatalli II's stated motivation for marching south to confront the Egyptians.

Hittite heavy chariots

Hittite chariots and those of their allies from Arzawa, Masa and Pitassa had three-man crews, usually comprising shieldless driver, shieldless spearman (who probably also had a bow) and a shield-bearer. Against lighter chariots these would attempt to come to close quarters where their long spears and larger crew would have the advantage.

Pack include one 15mm heavy chariot with a random pick out of three different variations of crews:

Syrian light chariots

Syrian chariots were used as fast and stable platform for archers.
They were the direct descendent of the Maryannu, but were now generally fighting as high quality skirmishing chariotry similar to that of Mitanni, with unarmoured bowmen riding in a swift chariot.

Hittite foot command

When the king couldn’t take direct command of the fighting army on the field, the command of the army was taken up by a member of the royal family, usually the brother of the king. In fact, many of the prestigious posts of the Hittite army, including command of its bodyguard corps and chariot battalions, were held by the brothers and immediate cousins of the ruler, thus leading to a tightly controlled core military force. They were followed by the other nobles of the Hittite state, who mainly commanded the smaller divisions of the army. Interestingly enough, as opposed to many other contemporary factions, these commanders were given relative freedom to conduct their own operations that mainly involved forays and raids into enemy territories.

Hittite Royal guard (Meshedi)

Commanded by the Gal Meshedi (or ‘Chief of the Bodyguards’), a high military rank usually held by the brothers of the king himself, The Meshedi bodyguards were also accompanied by another division of elite soldiers who are simply described in Hittite sources as ‘Men of the Golden Spear’. During battle scenarios, the Meshedi bodyguards were tasked with physically defending the king from enemy combatants and assailants. Beyond the scope of combat, some of these crack troops were chosen to guard the king’s quarters.

The Hittite army was also bolstered by a separate class of men, basically functioning as reservists. Known as the Lu Gistukul or ‘Men of Weapon’, these militia-type troops were organized in a similar manner to the Anglo-Saxon fyrd. Essentially, they were better armed, trained and equipped than the civilian conscripts and could be called upon during campaign seasons. However, during most parts of the year, they would be engaged in agricultural activities, and while regular soldiers were directly paid by the state (often in form of rations and housing), these reservists were paid in small lands – that could be cultivated by their family members for sustenance.

the Hittite army also depended on the warriors of the conquered regions. The state followed a policy of mass resettling the adults from the fringe conquered areas to the home provinces around the fortress of Hattusa – the capital of the empire. Some of these subjects were taken as slaves and distributed among the royal family and the landowning aristocracy, some were forced into labor or temple duties, while the remaining hardy ones were pressed into the army. Sometime prisoners-of-war were also formed into battle-worthy units that were commanded by their own leaders. Furthermore, the Hittites also made use of able-bodied conquered subjects who were not actually forced into service but rather employed as foreign merecnary contingents.

Hittite skirmishers

The Gasgans (also known as the Kaska people or the Kaskians), Anatolian highlanders who fought agains and for the Hittites, were regular components of an Hittite army. They were excellent skirmishers and would usually fight as slingers or archers. Ancient slingers were capable of hurling a projectile at over one hundred miles an hour and their effective range could be greater than that of arrows!

Diplomacy was rather favored by the Hittite royals, possibly due to the limitations of their military logistics. War was seen as the last resort, after all the other ‘peaceful’ options (ranging from diplomatic maneuvers, bribes to marriage alliances) had been spent. But in case of need the kings had emergency powers to press people into military service as well as calling upon distant subjects and allies for contingents. Historians hypothize that the Hittite army could regularly muster around 5000 – 10000 men for their expeditionary campaigns. The Hittite army at Kadesh, according to Ramesses’ account, numbered around 47000 so it was probably reinforced by a large number of conscripts as well as many mercenaries and allied troops.
